 Importance of Circle Time Activities in Preschool

Circle time is a very special time when the whole class meet together, sitting in a circle, either on the floor or on chairs. All children are unique and they have their own different ways to deal with situations. Therefore teachers should also deal with children as unique individuals. Circle time is one of the most important times when children are first beginning school. It is an activity performed in early childhood classrooms to introduce teachers and children to each other. It is a sharing time where children and teachers can share their special, personal feelings opinions, ideas and creativity. It is a platform where they can express themselves and be the part of family and acceptance. 

  Circle time requires careful planning, facilitation and evaluation by teachers to ensure its quality and effectiveness. Teachers can conduct circle time at preschool in different ways and methods such as planning the activities ahead, inviting children to sit in a circle, engaging them in different child centered activities such as celebrating good things, singing song, saying rhyme,asking them about their favourite things, do simple body movements and actions, telling and listening stories, playing games together and numerous activities, monitoring them throughout the session and ending the session by appreciating children for their active participation.

According to the web search result, circle time activities are practiced in some preschools of Nepal, but not in all of them. It is mainly practiced in some private schools of urban areas such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bhaktapur, lalitpur, Butwal where there are more schools and educational centers. Due to the lack of fewer opportunities and enough resources for circle time activities, it is not into practice in the preschool of rural areas. Some preschools of Nepal use circle time activities as part of their curriculum, especially those schools that follow play based or Montessori approach.

 

Many theorist have suggested the importance of circle time activities for preschoolers in their theories. I read and learn from the theorists how circle time activities can have direct influence on enhancing children’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive skill. So I highly recommend preschool teachers of Nepal to conduct circle time in the morning and evening time in their classroom and school with wide range of child friendly activities as these activities are beneficial for preschoolers in many ways. I would like to suggest that Circle time should be included in the curriculum of every preschool of Nepal. Circle time can be utilized as a great opportunity to foster not only children’s but also teacher’s social, emotional cognitive and physical skill. Teachers also gets highly motivated, creative and focused towards their work.

As a preschool teacher I will conduct circle time in my classroom and school every day so that my children can enjoy their learning in more fun way and they will develop a sense of responsibility and confidence through regular circle time activities.Also I will share about the importance of circle time activities to my friends, colleague and parents. I will assure them that circle time is one of the most valuable time of the school week that help your child in all areas of learning.
